The LOC method (Liquid, Oil, Cream) and LCO method (Liquid, Cream, Oil) are moisture layering techniques for natural hair. In LOC, you start with a water-based liquid, seal with an oil, then lock in moisture with a cream. In LCO, the cream goes before the oil.

LOC tends to work better for high porosity hair. LCO is often better for low porosity hair — the cream helps the oil absorb more easily when it goes on top. Try both and see which gives you more lasting moisture.

Most natural hair types benefit from deep conditioning once a week to every two weeks. High porosity and color-treated hair may need weekly sessions to repair protein-moisture balance. Low porosity hair can often go every two weeks since moisture has a harder time escaping once it's in.

Apply deep conditioner to clean, damp hair, cover with a plastic cap, and leave on for 20–45 minutes with or without heat. Heat (bonnet dryer or a warm towel) helps open the cuticle and improves absorption.

It depends on the product. Our hair oils and creams work on both wet and dry hair. Applying to damp or wet hair after washing gives you the best moisture absorption — cuticles are open and ready. For styling and definition, most people get better curl results applying creams to soaking-wet hair.

Using oil on dry hair between wash days is also great for sealing in moisture and taming frizz. Just use a lighter touch to avoid buildup.

Less than you think, especially with oils. For our Argan & Jojoba Hair Oil, start with 3–5 drops and add more only if needed. For creams, a pea-to-dime-sized amount works for shorter or fine hair; thicker or longer hair may need a quarter-sized amount or more.

Buildup is real — using too much product weighs down curls and attracts dirt. Start small, work it through in sections, and layer only as needed.

The simplest test: drop a clean, product-free strand of hair into a glass of water and wait 4 minutes.

— Floats at top → likely low porosity (tight cuticles, moisture struggles to enter)
— Sinks quickly → likely high porosity (raised cuticles, moisture enters and exits easily)
— Floats in the middle → medium/normal porosity

Genetics, heat styling, chemical treatments, and environmental damage all affect porosity. You can have different porosity levels at your roots vs. ends.

Low porosity hair needs lightweight, water-based products that won't sit on the cuticle. Our Argan & Jojoba Hair Oil is excellent here — both oils are light enough to absorb rather than coat.

Apply products to steamed or slightly warm-damp hair to temporarily open the cuticle. Avoid heavy butters as your first layer. The LCO method (Liquid, Cream, Oil) generally works better than LOC for low porosity hair.

High porosity hair needs richer, heavier products to fill gaps in the cuticle and lock in moisture. Our Coconut & Shea Butter Cream is ideal — shea butter is a natural occlusive that seals the cuticle and prevents moisture loss.

For the LOC method, use a heavier cream or butter as your last step to seal everything in. Apple cider vinegar rinses also help flatten raised cuticles between wash days.

Type 4c has the tightest curl pattern and greatest shrinkage — and it needs intense moisture and slip. Our Coconut & Shea Butter Cream provides the deep moisture and definition Type 4c needs. Our Argan & Jojoba Hair Oil works perfectly as a sealant in the LOC method.

Key tip: gentle detangling on wash day while soaking wet with conditioner, working from ends to roots, prevents breakage. Protective styles also help retain length between wash days.

Yes. Fine hair — whether straight, wavy, or curly — gets weighed down easily, so the key is using lighter amounts. Our Argan & Jojoba Hair Oil is great for fine hair because both oils are non-greasy and absorb well without coating the strand.

If using our Coconut & Shea Butter Cream, apply a small amount to damp hair avoiding the roots to preserve volume. Start with less than you think you need and build up.

Yes. Halo products are free of harsh sulfates and stripping agents that cause color to fade faster. Our gentle, moisture-rich formulas actually help color-treated hair — which is often more porous and needs extra moisture and protein support.

If you've just colored your hair, wait 72 hours before washing to let the color fully set, then use our products as part of your normal routine.
